Driving License

Any person who wishes to drive a motor vehicle must first obtain a Learner’s License for learning purposes. After completing the learning period, the applicant must pass a driving test to obtain a Permanent Driving License.

A person should be at least 20 years of age to learn driving for transport vehicles.

Learner’s License Requirements

Proof of Age Birth Certificate, School Leaving Certificate, Passport, etc.
Proof of Residence Passport, Ration Card, Electoral Roll, Electricity Bill, Telephone Bill, etc.
Medical Certificate Required only for Transport Vehicles and must be issued by a Registered Medical Practitioner.
Photographs 3 Passport Size Photographs
Fee Rs. 15/-
A Learner’s License is valid for 6 months. If the driving test is not passed within this period, a fresh learner’s license must be obtained.

Restrictions

  • A learner can drive only when accompanied by a licensed driver.
  • The licensed driver must be seated in a position to control the vehicle if necessary.
  • The vehicle must display “L” sign boards at the front and rear.
  • A learner driving a motorcycle cannot carry pillion riders except the instructor.

Obtaining Permanent Driving License

A Permanent Driving License is issued after successfully passing the driving test conducted by the RTO.

The driving test can be taken only after 30 days from the date of issue of the learner’s license.

In case of failure, a retest can be taken after 7 days.

Validity

  • Transport Vehicles: 3 Years
  • Other Vehicles: 5 Years or up to age 50, whichever is earlier
  • After age 50, renewal is required every 5 years

Renewal

  1. The Driving License
  2. Medical Certificate (for Transport Vehicles)
  3. 3 Passport Size Photographs
  4. Renewal Fee of Rs. 15/-
  5. Expired licenses can be renewed within 30 days without penalty
  6. Licenses expired beyond 30 days require penalty payment
  7. Licenses can be renewed at any RTO in India

Duplicate License

  1. License Number
  2. 3 Passport Size Photographs
  3. Fee of Rs. 20/-
  4. Application must be submitted to the same RTO
  5. If License Number is unavailable, fresh procedure applies

International Driving License

International Driving Permits are issued by RTOs and authorized motoring associations.

Validity: 1 Year

  • Valid Indian Driving License
  • Current Passport
  • 3 Recent Photographs
  • Fee of Rs. 10/-
