A vehicle wheel clamp (commonly known as a wheel boot) is a mechanical device fitted to one or more wheels of a stationary vehicle by traffic police to completely immobilize it.
The device locks onto the wheel hub and rim, preventing any forward or backward movement. Only authorized traffic police personnel possess the tools required to remove it — the vehicle cannot be driven until the clamp is unlocked.
Wheel clamping is governed under the Motor Vehicles Act and local GHMC/HMDA parking regulations. It is one of the most effective on-street enforcement tools available to Hyderabad Traffic Police.

Violation Detected
A traffic police officer or enforcement squad identifies a vehicle parked illegally — in a no-parking zone, on a busy road shoulder, in a fire lane, or blocking traffic flow.
Documentation & Notice
The violation is photographed and logged. A challan notice is prepared citing the specific violation. A visible notice sticker is placed on the vehicle windshield informing the owner of the clamp and instructions for release.
Clamp Applied
The wheel clamp is securely attached to the vehicle's front or rear wheel by the authorized officer. The device is locked with a tamper-proof key mechanism, making it impossible to remove without the correct tools.
Owner Pays Fine
The vehicle owner contacts the traffic police helpline or visits the nearest traffic police station. The applicable fine and clamping fee must be paid — online via e-challan portal or at the station — before any removal is arranged.
Clamp Removed
Upon payment confirmation, an authorized officer returns to the vehicle location and removes the clamp using the official key. The owner receives a clearance receipt and may drive the vehicle away.

Authorized Actions
- Only licensed traffic police officers may apply or remove clamps
- All clampings must be recorded in the official enforcement log
- A visible notice must be placed on the vehicle window
- Clamps must be applied carefully to avoid vehicle damage
Prohibited Actions
- Unauthorized removal of a clamp is a criminal offence
- Tampering with or cutting the device leads to enhanced penalties
- Attempting to drive a clamped vehicle causes severe wheel damage
- Private individuals or non-police personnel cannot apply clamps
Vehicle Owner Rights
- You may request to view the violation notice and officer's ID
- You can contest a wrong clamp through the grievance portal
- Clamp must be removed within a reasonable time after fine payment
